Aren’t we all nervous when we start living alone for the first time without our families? We often think about how we will cope with the new environment and new people, but all of that burden lessens when we have a roommate(s) that can be like our family.

If you are a student living in a hostel, then there is a higher chance that you are living with a roommate. Having a roommate can be the best or maybe even the worst part of your hostel life. But, it is up to you as to how you and your decisions let the circumstances play out.

As we spend a lot of time with our roommates (s), it is important to have a good and healthy relationship with them. They help us through thick and thin, and we are obliged to do the same for them. In short, roommates are like life support in the absence of family.

Here are a few tips from Schools in Hyderabad that can help you in having a better relationship with your roommate.

1. Be friendly: They are probably as nervous as you are, or even if they are not, try to start a basic conversation. Ask about their college or the course they are pursuing. Also, discuss how you want to set up your room. Make the living area comfortable for both of you. This also is a starting point for your friendship.

2. Spend quality time together: Find out if you guys have something in common and would like to do it together. Spending time with your roommate will strengthen your bond and bring you closer to your roommate. However, if not much in common, then do not push things too much.

3. Welcome all sides of them: We are all human beings, and we are all flawed in some way or the other. Accept your roommate. There might be some things about them that could disturb or irritate you, but instead of focusing on their flaws, focus on their strengths and their goodness.

4. Discuss boundaries: There are always a few things that we want to keep reserved to ourselves, and similar is the case with others. Talk about what you are comfortable with and where you draw the line. Also, listen to them when they tell you about their boundaries and try not to cross them. Even if you do, first make sure that you are close enough.

5. Work together while purchasing things: Whether you are shopping for groceries or any new item to decorate your room, try to do it with your roommate. This will also help you in getting to know their likes and preferences of many things. In that way, you can also keep into consideration what they like when you buy something in their absence too. But also keep in mind that you do not always have to neglect your wishes. If there is any conflict, you can talk and settle things down.

6. Ask for permission: Whether you want to invite a few friends over or would like to try any of their clothes or new products or would like to eat something they brought for themselves, make sure to ask them first. Consent is important no matter how close you are, and hence asking them will not hurt. In fact, it will make them feel good.

7. Give them their personal space: Everyone requires some time alone in a private space. Let them have the room to themselves every now and then and ask them to do the same for you. This way you can relax on your own, especially if the two of you are not that good friends yet.

8. Do not agree with everything: You might agree with everything to avoid conflicts, but you must avoid doing that. If you agree with every word, they say you might develop passive aggression, which could be toxic for your relationship. Politely put forward your points to let them know that you have a different stand on the topic.

A roommate is your support and maybe your closest friend unknowingly. Staying in the same room with someone 24*7 is bound to create a connection. If it’s the right person, your life can become much easier.

In the end, you might or might not end up living with the right person, but keeping a few points in mind can always help you with starting a healthy relationship and maintain it. Having a roommate can make your life much easier. Living alone can take a toll on your health in the long run. Human beings are social animals, and with company such as a roommate, your life can become much more manageable.
