US schools vs Indian schools

The difference between U.S. schools and Indian schools can be drastic, especially for middle-class families who are dishing out thousands of dollars to live nearby the best schools. However, the quality of education that their children are receiving may change if these parents start sending their kids to boarding schools in India.

Probably, you would end up comparing two with two. But there is no need to do that because I have already done it for you. I have used two schools, as examples. One is an Indian school and the other one is a U.S or United States school. Each of them has its own plus and minus points, I am pretty sure that certainly, you will get to know which school is good for your child and why; this comparison will definitely help you take the decision regarding boarding school at least.

How do US schools stack up against Indian schools?

A recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ranked the US at 25th place in an international list of school systems. India came in second to last.

How can that be? How could a country with equal measures of poverty and prosperity rank so low next to a developing nation?

The answer lies on how the OECD chose to define educational success.

In the United States, a student must complete all 12 years of schooling to graduate high school. In India, students can graduate after completing as little as five years of schooling.

However, if you look at student achievement when it comes to math, science and reading, it’s an entirely different story.

Indian schools perform well below average in these core skills, while American students are actually scoring above average in science and reading.

In terms of education and curriculum, Indian schools are better than American schools. In India, the students learn many subjects like math, science, social studies, Hindi or another local language, English, computers or art. All the subjects are mandatory for students to study until they graduate high school.

In America, however, students can choose which subjects to take according to what they want to study later on in college. For example, if a student wants to become an engineer then he or she might not want to take art classes because they will not be useful for them later on in life.

In general, the teaching methods are also different. In India, teachers teach concepts and how to apply them in problem solving situations. They are very strict and make sure all their students understand everything before moving on to the next topic. They use different methods of teaching such as power point presentations and videos that will help make a lesson easier to understand.

In the US, teachers teach everything from books so that the students can read it themselves at home and memorize it for tests and quizzes. If a student does not understand something then they can ask their teacher questions later on and get extra assistance after class is over
