As per research conducted by the Schools in Delhi, The eight schools in the Ivy League are— Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Pennsylvania are among the most well-known and selective universities both within the US and in the world at large. Because of this, Ivy League schools have tens of thousands of students applying to their universities. Due to their notoriously low acceptance rates, it’s challenging to get into any Ivies, although some are harder than others. Still, students worldwide dream of studying at one of the Ivy League schools as some are drawn to the esteemed prestige, faculty, and diverse communities that these universities hold, while others love the beautiful campuses and the wide range of resources it offers. The benefits of attending an Ivy League institution continue well even after graduation, as the Ivies enjoy strong alumni networks, and getting a degree from these institutions can definitely open a lot of doors for you in the future.

So, Let’s examine how hard it is to get into these prestigious schools.

Stage 1 — ACCEPTANCE RATE STATISTICS (2021–2022) –

The 2021–2022 admissions cycle was when the greatest shift to date in college acceptance rates occurred. Many colleges, especially Ivy League and other top-tier schools, received significantly more applications than they ever had. It’s important to note that application numbers shot up, however, the number of students admitted remained roughly the same at each school. In fact, in many schools, it even dropped a bit because those schools were holding spots for students who had deferred last year. Harvard (with a 3.2% acceptance rate) was the most selective school in the 2021–2022 admissions cycle. On the other end of the spectrum, the school with the highest acceptance rate is Cornell (8.7% undergraduate acceptance rate overall in 2020–2021). With these low acceptance rates students with high academic backgrounds also often face rejection in these schools.

So, what’s it that these universities look for in an applicant? The answer is simple, to get your foot in the door for top schools, competitive GPAs and test scores are the “foundation” of a strong application. But the less concrete, more qualitative aspects of an application that an applicant has done outside of school often makes all the difference between acceptance and rejection. Therefore, it is very important for an applicant to stand out from the crowd, excel in any one field/skill, and have a decent level of projects done in that same field to prove their passion for the same.

Stage 2 — THINGS TO FOLLOW TO ENSURE YOUR ADMISSION –

1. HIGH GRADES & TEST SCORES — Grades are still an important factor to get into any Ivy School, especially as an Indian applicant. A minimum of 1450–1500 SAT score is required and for international students, their school grades from grade 9th to the most recent grades are taken into great consideration. Your language proficiency test scores must be high too.

2. EXTRACURRICULAR PROFILES — Extracurricular profiles are made up of qualitative elements, including intellectual curiosity and exploration, authentic and demonstrated passions, community leadership, and how a student has made the most of the resources available to them. Has a student demonstrated an authentic passion for a subject or cause? Have they put time and energy into building something impactful out of their passions? Have they made a difference in their communities? Make sure that apart from your grades you are active in extracurriculars and have done a decent number of internships in the major or minor you wish to pursue. Join clubs at your School/college that you like, be a part of projects you’re passionate about, and note that quality of work is given more importance than a number of certificates.

3. STRONG LOR strong letter of recommendation from a teacher who’s seen you grow as a student, a well-written personal statement that reveals something not evident elsewhere in your application, or an impressive portfolio of work is a must to increase your odds of acceptance.

4. RIGHT MENTORS & GUIDANCE — Choosing the right guidance and consultancy during this journey is the most underrated yet the most essential factor to consider. A good mentor can ensure to enhance your skills, and passion and make you stand out, out of thousands of applicants. They can help you not only discover your strengths but present them in your application in the right way.

5. DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES — Try to demonstrate your leadership qualities through your essay. Talk about any project you have led or if you were a head at any school/college level societies. Remember to pour your heart out and showcase your real personality.

6. APPLY EARLY — applying early as well as to as many universities as possible can boost your chances to get into an Ivy school on the next level.
